| Traffic Management on the contract involved contra flows on the North and South bound lanes whilst the works were progressing. As you can imagine a number of parties had to be consulted in the works, as approvals to the design and build contract were on going.
Two metre deep tracks were excavated in the A9 to position the Kelly blocks and guide rails for the 8-11 metre Larson piles. This element of the works could only be done during day light hours due to noise. Permission was given to carry out limited piling due to the vicinity of traffic.
HQC had to construct a 14m cage to support and protect the 6 fibre optic BT cables over the width of the underpass. All works were carried out with this in place with the slewing of the cables only being carried out when BT were on site. If damaged the costs would have been in the region of 100k, and a possible 300k for diversion, so it was money well spent. |

Re-bar within the deck of the underpass, approximately 30 te of 20mm and 32mm bar with 300 cubic metres of concrete. Excavations to the under pass was carried out once the concrete had reached 75% of full strength.
The North bound verge of the contract, was home to 6no fibre optic BT cables, the clay ducting had to be removed and replaced with plastic split duct after being machine, then hand dug.
Approximately 120,000 te of material had to be removed for the North side works. Areas of rock were removed and recycled and used as fill and capping prior to sub base.
Due to the design and build levels of the carriageway Highland Quality Construction chose to use a SMA wearing course with a type one textured shell grip. |
